Maths Mastery: Teaching Through Rich and Relevant Problem Solving

Achieving True Mastery:

‘Teaching is underpinned by methodical curriculum design and supported by carefully crafted lessons and resources to foster deep conceptual and procedural knowledge’.

NCETM 2014

Engaged learners are far more likely to make the essential connections needed to become truly fluent. They become more  resilient, willing to explain and share their ideas. So, how do we plan for high levels of engagement?

  • Learn how to use Karen’s highly effective and innovative ‘Maths Sandwich’ helping teachers plan from meaning, through skills development to application and variation.

  • How to identify and plan from exciting real life problem solving contexts, make cross-curricular links and use well-loved stories (particularly effective in the EYFS and KS 1)

  • Integrate the highly successful ‘Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract’ approach (Bruner/Singapore) to ensure children constantly connect and sharpen their number sense and reasoning tools

  • Ensure children know WHY they are learning procedural approaches such as column method, rounding numbers, multiplying fractions and more!

Thank you so much Karen. I enjoyed the training this morning tremendously and tried out the ideas straight after lunch with my class leading to 20 mins of enthusiastic discussion! Brilliant!

The children said they really enjoyed it and wanted to do more so I am definitely going to be changing my teaching!’

  • Thank you for showing us HOW to change. So many courses just tell us what isn't working but not how to go about addressing this. Your approaches make so much sense! Thank you.

  • Just to say thank you again for 3 really brilliant talks at SGIS. We're a small school near Basel and we’d be interested in anything you’re doing nearby (Zurich way) so please let us know!
