Real Maths Mastery: Whole-School Teaching Using The ‘Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract’ Approach

‘Excellent, confidence-building, professional delivery. This training really took the pressure of ‘box–ticking’ and helped me re-focus on a slower, deeper, more creative child-led style of learning. Lots of practical resources and ideas’.

C Swan, Key Stage 2 Teacher,  Berkshire

This training will enable teachers to experience hands-on activities to develop the highly effective ‘Concrete- Pictorial – Abstract’ (CPA) approach from the EYFS to Year 6 and beyond.

Learn how to use CPA to:

  • Build essential understanding of place value, base 10 and the decimal system

  • Move ALL children from ‘counting in 1’s’ to partitioning and using known facts to significantly improve mental maths skills

  • Effectively teach relationships and greater depth of understanding in calculation (including times tables)

  • Teach whole school ‘bar modelling’ from the earliest stages to improve reasoning and problem solving

  •

Thank you so much Karen. I enjoyed the training this morning tremendously and tried out the ideas straight after lunch with my class leading to 20 mins of enthusiastic discussion! Brilliant!

The children said they really enjoyed it and wanted to do more so I am definitely going to be changing my teaching!’

  • Thank you for showing us HOW to change. So many courses just tell us what isn't working but not how to go about addressing this. Your approaches make so much sense! Thank you.

  • Just to say thank you again for 3 really brilliant talks at SGIS. We're a small school near Basel and we’d be interested in anything you’re doing nearby (Zurich way) so please let us know!
