Getting the Balance Right


This training aims to actively support schools in maintaining their professional ownership over their planning, whilst integrating published schemes and online resources to support, rather than dictate, high- quality teaching approaches.


  • During the day delegates will create a medium term planning example (using Karen’s ‘Maths Mission’ template) to carefully connect subject knowledge, plan their CPA journey, identify misconceptions and key language and used published schemes and online resources to create a resource that can be returned to year- on- year improving whole-school consistency and high-quality practice.


  • Review and deepen teacher subject knowledge around the decimal number system, approaches to teaching mental and written calculation,  teaching fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio with meaning.


  • Ensure all staff gain a deep understanding regarding how to use the ‘Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract’ approach to teaching number, fractions and calculation and offer this approach to ALL pupils in every key stage across the school.
